WELCOME TO THE GATHERING PLACE! ABOUT US >

Welcome to our new website and welcome to a new year of hope and peer support! We hope to see you at The Gathering Place soon, please give us a call if you have advocacy or linkage service needs or want to stop by to visit or learn more about our services and programming! The Gathering Place is a sober environment, please do not visit under the influence!

We are a free service to the community, supported in part by the 317 Board, OhioMHAS, other local and regional grants and individual contributions.

The Gathering Place is a member-operated peer recovery organization that serves adults with lived experience of a mental health issue or a co-occurring mental health and substance use disorder.

Staff and members work together to provide peer support, linkage services, advocacy, mental health education, recreational and wellness activities, opportunities to affordable housing, access to healthy food, and community integration opportunities, all in a welcoming home-like environment.

7th  Annual “Community Illumination” Advocacy Event

For Immediate Release: ,  2023 Athens, Ohio- – The Gathering Place presents their 7th annual “Community Illumination” Advocacy Event on Thursday, March 30, from 4:30pm-7:00pm at Central Venue on 29 E. Carpenter Street, Athens, Ohio. The event is designed to raise awareness and bust stigma about mental health and substance use disorders and promote recovery in our community and uses art as a vehicle to conduct outreach to our community about The Gathering Place’s programming and services. The arts event will include: member artwork for sale and display, member poetry reading, and a live performance by The Gathering Place’s band “The Gatherers”.

Community members are also invited to speak or recite poetry or play a song during our open mic time on issues of community mental health and recovery. We encourage mental health providers/supporters and peers with a lived experience of a mental health disorder or substance use disorder and in recovery to share!

The event is free to the public and families are encouraged.  Donations of Personal Care items are requested for a collaborative project with Appalachian Behavioral Healthcare, (12 oz. bottles of shampoo, conditioner, body wash, body lotion, deodorant, toothbrush, toothpaste, feminine hygiene products and small boxes or bottles of laundry detergent) as we make “discharge” bags for peers integrating back into community life after a hospital stay.

Made possible by support from Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, 317 Board and Central Venue!
